Scope and Content Detail of tiling in fireplace in drawing room, Caldergrove House, Hamilton Road, Glasgow Caldergrove House, a large villa in its own grounds by the Rotten Calder river, was built c.1830. In 1875 a mansard roof and Ionic-style porch were added to give the house a more imposing façade. The interior was elaborately decorated in 1875, and again in 1919. Sadly the interior was gutted by fire in 1983. This shows the right-hand tile inside the fireplace in the drawing room. The fireplace is constructed from white marble with a copper inner area inset with tiles. The tile panel bears a design in the Roman style with printed cameos amongst gilded ornaments. The hearth is also tiled. Ornate fireplaces like this example were often the decorative focus of the room. They were necessary to provide heat, but also provided yet another surface for embellishment. White marble, shining copper, and gilded and painted tiles reflect the Victorians love of the layering of decorative surfaces. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
