Scope and Content Drumadoon from the south-south-east, No 17 Upper Colquhoun Street, Helensburgh, Argyll & Bute Drumadoon, a large Scottish Arts and Crafts-style villa, was built 1901-3 to designs by architect William Leiper (1839-1916). Built to overlook the Clyde estuary, it presents an impressive façade of red sandstone, half-timbering and harled details. It was converted into a nursing home in the late 20th century. This shows the house with its central half-timbered, gabled bay with canted windows to the ground and first floors. To the far right is a conservatory and circular tower. To the left is an arched doorway with a half-timbered balcony above. The tall red sandstone bay (left) and the linked chimney stacks emphasise the height of the building. This house was built for the McAlpine family who owned a Glasgow-based shipping firm. The design shows influences from the architecture of traditional English buildings combined to picturesque effect, with particular reference to the work of architect Richard Norman Shaw (1831-1912).
