Scope and Content Dalmore from the south-south-east, Rhu Road Lower, Helensburgh, Argyll & Bute Dalmore was built in 1873 to designs by architect William Leiper (1839-1916). This Scottish Baronial-style mansion decorated with crowsteps, turrets and sculptured dormers is constructed from red sandstone rubble with smooth ashlar dressings. The house was divided into flats by architect Alan Berry in the 1970s. This shows the house with the crowstepped gable on the left intersected by a tower with conical roof. A corbelled turret fills the space between the bays. Dormers with elaborately-sculptured tops flank the double-height bay windows (centre), surmounted by a semi-octagonal attic storey with an angular roof. The ancient, castle-like mood of this mansion captures the romantic Victorian ideal of a Highland tower-house. The fortress-like Scottish Baronial style drew upon ancient architectural forms to suggest the client's wealth, power and ancestral roots. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
