Scope and Content Dalmore from the east, Rhu Road Lower, Helensburgh, Argyll & Bute Dalmore was built in 1873 to designs by architect William Leiper (1839-1916). This Scottish Baronial-style mansion decorated with crowsteps, turrets and sculptured dormers is constructed from red sandstone rubble with smooth ashlar dressings. The house was divided into flats by architect Alan Berry in the 1970s. This shows the two gabled ends on the side of the house with their crowstepped gables. A double-height bay window with octagonal attic storey forms a tower to the left with a finialled roof. Relieving arches in the stonework can be seen above the mullioned windows (divided by stone glazing bars). Relieving arches are used above the windows on this side of the house to spread the weight of the wall above and therefore relieve pressure on the windows. Such arches were widely used in medieval architecture. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
