Scope and Content Ceiling rose in the principal room on first floor, No 77 London Road, Kilmarnock, East Ayrshire No 77 London Road is a two-storeyed, mid-19th century villa constructed from ashlar stonework with polished stone dressings. Its three-bayed façade features an advanced bay to the right with lower bay window, and columned doorpiece and balustrades below the first-floor windows. This shows two of the eight cast plaster Medieval-style heads which decorate the ceiling centrepiece, a feature commonly called a 'rose'. The female head (left) looks towards her companion amid scrolling foliage which has been gilded to emphasise the richness and complexity of the design. The ornate plaster 'enrichments' of heads and flowers would be cast in the workshop to be individually applied to a border 'run' in place directly onto the ceiling. These intricately cast and gilded heads and scrolls would have appealed to the Victorian romantic vision of the Medieval age. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
