Scope and Content Original stencilling on drawing-room wall of The Elms, Cairnie Road, Arbroath, Angus The Elms, a French Gothic-style villa, was designed by the architect William Leiper (1839-1916) and built between 1864 and 1866 for Provost Corsar of Arbroath, a linen manufacturer. The house was used as a children's home in the late 20th century, and is now in private hands. This shows the wall of the drawing room with modern woodchip wallpaper stripped back to reveal the original painted and stencilled decorative scheme. Dull brown and green bands of colour are decorated with black, green, gold and vivid red lining and repeated designs. Stencilled wall decorations were used in some homes in the 18th and 19th centuries in imitation of more expensive wallpaper. In the context of this fine Victorian villa, the simple repeating patterns are intended to show the skills of the craftsman decorator and an appreciation of medieval designs.
