Scope and Content Vertically-sliding shutters in the library of The Elms, Cairnie Road, Arbroath, Angus The Elms, a French Gothic-style villa, was designed by the architect William Leiper (1839-1916) and built between 1864 and 1866 for Provost Corsar of Arbroath, a linen manufacturer. The house was used as a children's home in the late 20th century, and is now in private hands. This shows a window with a panelled inner shutter shown in the lowered position. This slides vertically on pulleys to cover the window. A metal plate in the shutter has a central hole for the insertion of a rod to move the shutter up and down. The exterior of the window has been boarded-up to protect the glass from vandalism whilst unoccupied. These unusual original 19th-century shutters are a good example of the many novel and ingenious devices patented in the Victorian age. Technological advances and a desire to have the latest developments fitted into wealthy homes led to the invention of many novel architectural features and fittings.
