Scope and Content Remains of the drawing-room fireplace, The Elms, Cairnie Road, Arbroath, Angus The Elms, a French Gothic-style villa, was designed by the architect William Leiper (1839-1916) and built between 1864 and 1866 for Provost Corsar of Arbroath, a linen manufacturer. The house was used as a children's home in the late 20th century, and is now in private hands. This shows what remains of the drawing-room fireplace, after the surround had been removed. Only the inner part of the fireplace and part of the hearth remains. Under the soot and rubble the rich red, green, blue and yellow design of the original Victorian tiles is still visible. These richly-coloured tiles were produced using the 'dust-pressing' method. This technique uses dried-out clay which is die-stamped before being glazed. Tiles produced in this manner resemble the more expensive hand-produced 'tube-lined' tiles, in which the raised design is 'piped' onto the tile like icing onto a cake.
