Scope and Content Fireplace in the hall of The Elms, Cairnie Road, Arbroath, Angus The Elms, a French Gothic-style villa, was designed by the architect William Leiper (1839-1916) and built between 1864 and 1866 for Provost Corsar of Arbroath, a linen manufacturer. The house was used as a children's home in the late 20th century, and is now in private hands. This shows a carved stone fireplace with polished stone columns, situated in the hall. The inner part of the fireplace is decorated with a geometric pattern of tiles with a scroll-patterned border. There are remains of circular bell pushes on either side of the fireplace. This solid, medieval-style fireplace complements the Gothic Revival exterior with its arches, carvings and stained glass. A fireplace in the hall was necessary to warm visitors whilst they waited to be received by the master and mistress of the house. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
