Scope and Content Capitals on columns in the hall, The Elms, Cairnie Road, Arbroath, Angus The Elms, a French Gothic-style villa, was designed by the architect William Leiper (1839-1916) and built between 1864 and 1866 for Provost Corsar of Arbroath, a linen manufacturer. The house was used as a children's home in the late 20th century, and is now in private hands. This shows two carved stone capitals supporting an archway in the hall of the villa. Each one shows a variety of leafy decoration including ferns and clover. The columns themselves are made of polished pink stone. Medieval stonemasons decorated buildings with a wealth of new and imaginative sculptural designs, including adaptations of Classical architectural forms. These capitals resemble the Corinthian capital, but use a variety of plant forms rather than the traditional acanthus leaf decoration. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
