Scope and Content Panelled and stencilled ceiling in the drawing room of The Elms, Cairnie Road, Arbroath, Angus The Elms, a French Gothic-style villa, was designed by the architect William Leiper (1839-1916) and built between 1864 and 1866 for Provost Corsar of Arbroath, a linen manufacturer. The house was used as a children's home in the late 20th century, and is now in private hands. This shows the painted and stencilled ceiling in the drawing room. The timber panels have been hand-decorated with complex geometric designs in rich brown, green and gold. The ornately carved square panels (bottom left and right) originally held light fittings. This medieval-style ceiling gives richness and warmth to what was originally one of the most important rooms in the house. The drawing room would be used as a space for entertaining after dinner and reflected the host's sense of style and taste. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
