Scope and Content South Front, Rothmar, High Askomil Road, Campbeltown, Argyll & Bute Rothmar, a large American-style house in an imposing site overlooking Campbeltown Loch, was designed in 1897 by the architect, John James Burnet, for the shipbuilder, William Broom. The architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, was commissioned to photograph the house in 1900. This impressively shaped house, with rubble walls and red sandstone dressings, has an asymmetrical south front with Neo-Classical details. The three bays to the left are evenly spaced, but a tall, single-storeyed, semicircular bow window with engaged Ionic columns pushes out from the wide bay on the right. The Glasgow architect, John James Burnet (1857-1938), studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Although he opened an office in London in 1905, he remained an important architect in Glasgow and other parts of the west of Scotland, designing in both the Beaux-Arts and American Neo-Classical styles.
