Scope and Content Sick Children's Hospital (now the Royal Edinburgh Hospital for Sick Children), Sciennes Road, Edinburgh The Sick Children's Hospital, designed in 1892 by the architect, George Washington Browne, was built on the site of the old Trades Maiden Hospital. The exterior was photographed c.1900 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The hospital, built in a Jacobean style, encloses three sides of a small front courtyard. The central block has a richly decorated armorial doorway set between two very tall bays, and the two south-facing side wings contain three floors of wards. The Sick Children's Hospital, founded in 1860, was the first hospital in Edinburgh specifically designed to deal with children's ailments. It existed at several different locations in the city before opening in these new premises in Sciennes Road. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
