Scope and Content Edinburgh Life Assurance Company Building, No 26 George Street and Nos 53-5 Hanover Street, Edinburgh, from George Street (now part of the Royal Society of Edinburgh) The Edinburgh Life Assurance Company Building, a commercial office on the corner of George Street and Hanover Street, was designed in 1908-9 in an Edwardian Renaissance style by the architect, John More Dick Peddie. Harry Bedford Lemere was commissioned to photograph the exterior in 1909. This building, in polished Portland stone, has a rusticated ground floor, and giant Ionic columns which rise between the first and second floors. A pediment above the entrance bears the company's coat-of-arms, and on the corner, a copper drum supports a bronze statue of Prudence by the sculptor, Percy Portsmouth. The new building was designed to accommodate the rapidly expanding company on the ground and most of the first floor, with lettable office accommodation available on the upper floor. The company had not far to move into its new offices, having originally been housed in the building next door (left). Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
