Scope and Content Board Room, Edinburgh Life Assurance Company Building, No 26 George Street and Nos 53-5 Hanover Street, Edinburgh (now part of the Royal Society of Edinburgh) The Edinburgh Life Assurance Company Building, a commercial office on the corner of George Street and Hanover Street, was designed in 1908-9 in an Edwardian Renaissance style by the architect, John More Dick Peddie. Harry Bedford Lemere was commissioned to photograph the interior in 1909. This grand first-floor board room has a fine late 18th-century marble chimneypiece, possibly from the original Georgian house on the site, and a Neo-Adam ceiling with delicate plasterwork detail. The walls are lined with panels of crimson Utrecht velvet from the company's former office next door. The Edinburgh Life Assurance Company 's former office next door at No 24 George Street was designed in 1843 by the architects William Burn and David Bryce. The panels of Utrecht velvet were removed from the old board room where they had hung for 64 years. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
