Scope and Content Manager's Room, Edinburgh Life Assurance Company Building, No 26 George Street and Nos 53-5 Hanover Street, Edinburgh (now part of the Royal Society of Edinburgh) The Edinburgh Life Assurance Company Building, a commercial office on the corner of George Street and Hanover Street, was designed in 1908-9 in an Edwardian Renaissance style by the architect, John More Dick Peddie. Harry Bedford Lemere was commissioned to photograph the interior in 1909. This room has a fine 18th-century chimneypiece with Adamesque detailing that may have come from the original Georgian house on the site. The pictures on the wall are of Sir Walter Scott (centre), the Marquis of Breadalbane, the then president of the bank (left), and Viscount Lammington, the vice-president (right). The author and lawyer, Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832), was a founder member of the company, which was established in Edinburgh in 1823. Initially the company allowed only professional people such as lawyers, accountants and bankers throughout Scotland to apply for life insurance. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
