Scope and Content View from west of Red Tower, Douglas Drive West, Helensburgh, Argyll & Bute Red Tower was built in 1898 to designs by architect William Leiper (1839-1916). It comprises a two-storeyed and attic Franco-Scottish Renaissance-style villa with Old English details. Originally built for wealthy provision merchant James Allan, the house is now converted for use as a drug rehabilitation centre. This shows the side elevation of the house with its prominent three-stage tower (right) with conical roof and ball-topped finial. Next to this a canted bay with leaded windows to the ground floor rises to form a parapet with canted dormer behind. At the rear of the house (left) is the former service wing with its two stair-towers and dormer window with barge-boarded eaves. The service wing was often hidden away at the rear of most grand houses, or else servants' rooms and working areas were hidden away in the attics and cellars of a house. To maintain a house of this size required a large staff of servants, not to mention the staff needed to maintain the gardens, look after horses, and later, to drive the automobiles.
