Scope and Content View from south of Red Tower, Douglas Drive West, Helensburgh, Argyll & Bute Red Tower was built in 1898 to designs by architect William Leiper (1839-1916). It comprises a two-storeyed and attic Franco-Scottish Renaissance-style villa with Old English details. Originally built for wealthy provision merchant James Allan, the house is now converted for use as a drug rehabilitation centre. This shows the tower with conical roof on the left and the entrance doorway highlighted by a Renaissance-style porch with balustrade above protecting barge-boarded, half-timbered gable dormers. Right of the front door a balcony rests on stone brackets, and another dormer rises from the roof above. To the far right is a full-height canted bay projecting through the gable. This building combines several styles and has the asymmetric, 'free-form' look championed in Leiper's villa designs. The interior decoration continues this mixing of Scottish 17th-century style with the vernacular details of Old English building in its fine quality decorations and fixtures.
