Scope and Content View from south-west of laundry, Brantwoode, No 4 Munro Drive West, Helensburgh, Argyll & Bute Brantwoode, an L-plan, asymmetrical villa was built in 1895 to designs by architect William Leiper (1839-1916). The two-storeyed house is built from red sandstone with red tile-hangings, mock half-timbering and leaded windows. The interior layout includes an inter-connecting library, living hall and dining room. This shows the laundry with its row of sinks on fluted ceramic bases. The tops of the sinks have removable wooden covers which provide an extra working area. A wooden staircase (right) has a ball-finialled newel post. The cupboard under the stairs contains a fold down bath. Wash-day, traditionally on Mondays, was a very busy day in the 19th-century house. Servants would wash the clothes in a boiler, transfer them to the sinks to be rinsed, then put them through a mangle to get rid of excess water. The clothes would be dried in the garden before being ironed with flat irons. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
