Scope and Content View of inglenook fireplace in drawing room, Brantwoode, No 4 Munro Drive West, Helensburgh, Argyll & Bute Brantwoode, a two-storeyed, asymmetrical villa was built in 1895 to designs by architect William Leiper (1839-1916). The house is built from red sandstone with red tile-hangings and has mock half-timbered details in the Arts and Crafts/Old English style. This shows the inglenook of polished wood, and a carved stone fireplace within. Flanking arches in the side wall of the fireplace contain windows which light the area. On the mantelpiece with its panelled overmantel is a black slate clock flanked by oriental vases. William Leiper began working in Helensburgh in 1870 after moving there from Glasgow. He worked on many fine buildings, ecclesiastical, commercial and domestic, but is best remembered for the remarkable Venetian façade of Templeton's carpet factory in Glasgow, built in 1889.
