Scope and Content View from south-east of dining room, Rockland, No 150 Clyde Street East, Helensburgh, Argyll & Bute Rockland is a Greek Classical-style villa built in 1854 to designs by architect Alexander 'Greek' Thomson (1817-75). It is built from grey, red and cream rubble masonry with cream ashlar dressings. The service buildings and kitchen were converted into a separate dwelling in the late 20th century. This shows the dining room, identifiable by the recessed area framed by square columns which once held a sideboard. The doorway is framed by carved Classical ornamentation, and the cornice and ceiling are covered by anthemion (stylised honeysuckle) scroll and rosette plasterwork designs. Alexander 'Greek' Thomson gained his nickname due to his love of the proportions and Classical style of Greek architectural forms. He used these to great effect in his many commissions, mostly in the vicinity of Glasgow itself, where he worked on churches, warehouses and mansions. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
