Scope and Content View from north-west of Shalimar, Nos 19-20 Racecourse View, Ayr, South Ayrshire Shalimar was built in 1868, and altered in 1897 and 1900 to designs by architect James A Morris (1857-1942). Built of coursed sandstone with a slated roof, it is a large, asymmetrical-plan mansion in the Scottish Baronial style with Jacobean details. This shows the advanced, canted entrance porch to the house with its balustrade and obelisk finials. The bay (right) has double-height bay windows, turrets, crenellations at the wall-head, and a crowstepped gable. The left bay has tripartite windows and a single corner turret. The design of this mansion draws upon the traditional features of Scottish Baronial architecture, such as turrets, crow steps and crenellations. Applied to the suburban house such features suggest a sense of power, wealth and ancient family origins. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
