Scope and Content View from north-east of staircase hall, Savoy Croft, No 3 Savoy Park, Ayr, South Ayrshire Savoy Croft, built in 1893, was designed by architect James A Morris (1857-1942) as his own home. It is a fine villa built of red Mauchline stone with harling and decorative stone dressings. The villa is built in the Arts and Crafts style with traditional Scottish design features. This shows the staircase with its double landing. The banisters and balustrade are made from polished timber, and a feature double arch is built into the wall. The walls are papered in a William Morris-style design and a picture rail supports various gilt-framed pictures on metal chains. The use of fine carpentry in this house is reflected in the panelling found in many rooms, in the staircase, and in the various fitted fireplaces. These incorporate useful shelves, glass-fronted cabinets for displaying ornaments, candle-holders, and often feature inset paintings and Delft tiles. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
