Scope and Content View from south-east of hall, Savoy Croft, No 3 Savoy Park, Ayr, South Ayrshire Savoy Park, a large Arts and Crafts-style villa with traditional Scottish design features, was built in 1893 to designs by architect James A Morris (1857-1942) as his own home. It is built of red Mauchline stone with an unusual asymmetrically-designed exterior. This shows the hall with its wood-panelled walls and balustraded staircase. The upper walls are covered in a wallpaper with a swirling, floral design in the manner of William Morris. A large chest displays silver and china, and at the foot of the stairs is a fine hand-woven prayer rug. The use of fine carpentry in this house is reflected in the panelling found in many rooms, and also in the elaborate fitted fireplaces. These incorporate useful shelves, and glass-fronted cabinets for displaying ornaments, candle-holders, and often feature inset paintings and Delft tiles. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
