Scope and Content View from west of kitchen in Savoy Croft, No 3 Savoy Park, Ayr, South Ayrshire Savoy Park, a large Arts and Crafts-style villa with traditional Scottish design features, was built in 1893, to designs by architect James A Morris (1857-1942) as his own home. It is built of red Mauchline stone with an unusual asymmetrically designed exterior. This shows the kitchen with its range (left), scrubbed-top table in front, light fittings with pulleys for adjusting their height, and linoleum-covered floor. The timber press (centre) has two small copper kettles on top. The wooden box on the wall (right) with the glass front is part of the electric service-bell system, the display indicating to which room a servant should go. 19th-century kitchens were filled with separate items of furniture, in contrast to the built-in, fitted kitchens of today. The coal-fired range was the centre of activity in the room, and a scrubbed table would be the main work surface, doubling as the dining table for the servants. Large presses would store utensils and washing up was generally done in a separate scullery. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
