Scope and Content View from east of west attic bedroom, Savoy Croft, No 3 Savoy Park, Ayr, South Ayrshire Savoy Park, a large Arts and Crafts-style villa with traditional Scottish design features, was built in 1893 to designs by architect James A Morris (1857-1942) as his own home. It is built of red Mauchline stone with an unusual asymmetrically-designed exterior. This shows the attic room with its windows under the slope of the roof. The walls are half-panelled with timber, and the wooden floor has been polished and a large oriental rug laid on top. The tiled fireplace includes three decorated tiles with floral motifs. A moulded fender protects the hearth area upon which stands an airing rail for towels or clothes. The attic rooms of 19th century houses were usually used as bedrooms for the servants. Although housemaids, cooks, man-servants and butlers had to work very long hours with little time off, they did receive uniforms, meals and accommodation as part of their job.
