Scope and Content View of bathroom on first floor of Savoy Croft, No 3 Savoy Park, Ayr, South Ayrshire Savoy Park, a large Arts and Crafts-style villa with traditional Scottish design features, was built in 1893 to designs by architect James A Morris (1857-1942) as his own home. It is built of red Mauchline stone with an unusual asymmetrically-designed exterior. This shows the huge cast iron roll-top bath. The taps are mounted above the bath in the wooden-panelled wall behind. A separate plunger to release the bath plug sits just to the right. An earthenware sink with a piece of zinc above as a splash-back (mounted on metal brackets). The room has another washbasin by the window and a large, wall-mounted heated towel rail. The earthenware sink in this room has the taps mounted high above it to allow a maidservant to fill up a bucket for her cleaning duties. This is an unusual feature in a bathroom, as service functions were usually kept separate, or hidden away, from other domestic areas in the 19th century. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
