Scope and Content View of dressing-room fireplace, on first floor of Savoy Croft, No 3 Savoy Park, Ayr, South Ayrshire Savoy Park, a large Arts and Crafts-style villa with traditional Scottish design features, was built in 1893 to designs by architect James A Morris (1857-1942) as his own home. It is built of red Mauchline stone with an unusual asymmetrically-designed exterior. This shows a fireplace cleverly designed to fit into an awkward corner of the dressing room. The simple wooden surround has a Delft-tiled inner area, and a large hearth with protective moulded fender. Wooden shelves on brackets provide a display area above the fire. Tiles were first produced in imitation of Chinese blue and white porcelain in the Dutch town of Delft in the 17th century. Delftware is earthenware pottery which is tin-glazed and hand painted, often using the now famous Delft blue glaze. These tiles were widely exported throughout Europe, and are often found decorating fireplaces. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
