Scope and Content View of fireplace in dining room, Savoy Croft, No 3 Savoy Park, Ayr, South Ayrshire Savoy Park, a large Arts and Crafts-style villa with traditional Scottish design features, was built in 1893 to designs by architect James A Morris (1857-1942) as his own home. It is built of red Mauchline stone with an unusual asymmetrically-designed exterior. This shows the fireplace with its central painting 'Architecture, Sculpture and Painting' by artist William Strang (1859-1921). The fitted fireplace contains bookshelves (left) and further display racks under a canopy supported on wooden columns. The fireplace has inset orange ceramic tiles with a copper border. William Strang, a friend of Morris, was a Scottish artist who worked in London. He began his career by working on pencil portraits and etchings, and from c.1905 concentrated on painting. He is best known for his portraits, Biblical and allegorical paintings. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
