Scope and Content View of chimney piece in north corner room on the first floor of Savoy Park, No 3 Savoy Park, Ayr, South Ayrshire Savoy Park, built in 1893, was designed by architect James A Morris (1857-1942) as his own home. It is a large Arts and Crafts-style villa built of red Mauchline stone with areas of harling and asymmetrical details inspired by traditional Scottish architectural forms. This shows an impressive fireplace which incorporates a pair of glass-fronted display cabinets. The simple surround is filled with an impressive display of Delft tiles, of two distinct types. The border and hearth tiles feature circular motifs of landscapes and people, and the inner tiles have horizontal landscapes which continue from tile to tile. Tiles were first produced in imitation of Chinese blue and white porcelain in the Dutch town of Delft in the 17th century. Delftware is earthenware pottery which is tin-glazed and hand painted, often using the now famous Delft blue glaze. These tiles were widely exported throughout Europe, and are often found decorating fireplaces. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
