Scope and Content Main entrance, Atlantic Chambers, Nos 43-7 Hope Street and No 1A Cadogan Street, Glasgow Atlantic Chambers, an impressive commercial building in the Beaux Arts style, was designed c.1899 by the architect, Sir John James Burnet. The architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, was commissioned to photograph the building shortly after it was completed in 1900. The tall, narrow entrance to the building, between the ground-floor shops, is crowned by a frieze sculpted with waves and flanked by seated figures representing Britannia (right) and the city of Glasgow (left). Above, Tuscan columns support a pediment broken by a magnificent winged figure. The name of the building, Atlantic Chambers, was chosen to celebrate Glasgow's links with America which developed during the 17th and 18th centuries through the city's Atlantic trade with Virginia and the West Indies in tobacco and, to some extent, slaves.
