Scope and Content Garie Works (Mill), Kirriemuir, Angus This mill was founded in 1868 by the Wilkie family to weave jute fabric for sacking and bagging, presumably using yarn spun in Dundee, which was the centre of the jute trade. The mill was originally steam-powered, and there were still three steam engines in it in 1969. This shows a small horizontal single-cylinder steam engine built by Douglas and Grant to drive a dynamo supplying electricity to the mill. The belt drive seen here is to an overhead lineshaft, from which the dynamo was driven. To the left is the edge of the switchboard from which the electricity was distributed. This installation was kept as a standby in 1969, and was in immaculate condition, as can be seen here. The use of a horizontal engine like this to generate electricity was rare by the 1960s, vertical high-speed engines being more normal. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
