Scope and Content Detail of cornice on the east side of the music room, Carrick House, Carrick Avenue, Ayr, South Ayrshire Carrick House, a fine Victorian mansion with a huge music room, built c.1844. It was extended in the 1890s, when fine interior decoration was carried out by John Archibald Campbell (d. 1909), and in 1919 by A Stevenson. The house was demolished c.1979, and the site used for the construction of sheltered housing. This shows part of the cornice on the exterior of the music room. A band of carved stone bears sculptured stone masks and stylised leaves at intervals along its length. The male face has a moustache and long hair, whilst the female has a band tied across her hair. These stone masks are 1890s versions of the carved gargoyles and masks which decorated medieval churches and cathedrals. In this context they were believed to frighten away evil spirits, although some may have been carved for purely decorative reasons. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
