Scope and Content View from south-west of music room inglenook fireplace, Carrick House, Carrick Avenue, Ayr, South Ayrshire Carrick House, a fine Victorian mansion with a huge music room, was built in c.1844. It was extended in the 1890s, when fine interior decoration was carried out by John Archibald Campbell (died 1909), and in 1919 by A Stevenson. The house was demolished c.1979, and the site used for the construction of sheltered housing. This shows the huge inglenook fireplace in the music room. The carved stonework of high quality frames a pair of upholstered seats flanking a variegated marble fireplace. A dated panel on the top of the fireplace is inscribed 'A.D 1898'. A doorway on the right leads to the garden. This dramatic feature fireplace was the focus of the music room extension, which had a high roof lined with rich wood panelling and was lit by stained glass windows. The door-frames were carved with roundels, masks and shell motifs. The exterior also featured finely carved stonework. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
