Scope and Content Detail of carved date panel on east wall of music room, Carrick House, Carrick Avenue, Ayr, South Ayrshire Carrick House, a fine Victorian mansion with a huge music room, was built c.1844. It was extended in the 1890s, when fine interior decoration was carried out by John Archibald Campbell (d. 1909), and in 1919 by A Stevenson. The house was demolished c.1979, and the site used for the construction of sheltered housing. This shows a carved stone panel set into the wall of the music room extension. The date of construction, 1890, is carved within the letters 'A.D', which stand for Anno Domini, 'in the year of our Lord'. The elongated cross-bar of the letter 'A' and the stylised number nine link the letters and numbers together. The music room extension was a tall, elegant room, designed for entertaining. A huge stone inglenook fireplace, with built-in padded seats formed the focal point of the room. The roof was partially glazed with stained glass, and the walls ornamented with carved wooden panelling. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
