Scope and Content View of former conservatory, Carrick House, Carrick Avenue, Ayr, South Ayrshire Carrick House, a fine Victorian mansion with a huge music room, was built c.1844. It was extended in the 1890s, when fine interior decoration was carried out by John Archibald Campbell (d. 1909), and in 1919 by A Stevenson. The house was demolished in c.1979, and the site used for the construction of sheltered housing. This shows the area once occupied by the conservatory of the house. It is raised above the garden, and an elegant iron spiral staircase with ornate railings connects the two areas. The walls are clad in wood panelling which has been painted white. The glazing is missing, but the angle of the roof can still be seen. The conservatory was a common feature in large 19th-century homes. It would be used for cultivating exotic plants and for taking tea in. The Victorians enjoyed studying the natural world, and a conservatory suggested that the owners had an appreciation and knowledge of plant life. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
