Scope and Content View from south-east of Carrick House, Carrick Avenue, Ayr, South Ayrshire Carrick House, a fine Victorian mansion with a huge music room, was built c.1844. It was extended in the 1890s, when fine interior decoration was carried out by John Archibald Campbell (d. 1909), and in 1919 by A Stevenson. The house was demolished c.1979, and the site used for the construction of sheltered housing. This shows the main front of the house, the first view a visitor would see on arrival. A pair of gabled bays form the façade, that on the left advanced, and incorporating a square bay window. Between these is a porch with arched doorway, sheltered by a cast iron canopy. This large house was filled with opulent 1890s decorative features including carved stone heads and armorial emblems, painted ceilings, Adam-style fireplaces, fine decorative ironwork and wood panelling, and a feature inglenook fireplace of huge proportions in the music room.
