Scope and Content View from west of Carrick House, Carrick Avenue, Ayr, South Ayrshire Carrick House, a fine Victorian mansion with a huge music room extension, was originally built in c.1844. It was extended in the 1890s, when fine interior decoration was carried out by John Archibald Campbell (d. 1909), and again in 1919 by A Stevenson. The house was demolished c.1979, and the site used for the construction of sheltered housing. This shows the house in a state of disrepair. Gables at the wall-head and second floor windows with dormer-heads breaking the roofline add interest to the structure. The huge music room extension can be seen on the right. The white-painted area with cast iron railings shows where the conservatory once stood. This large house was filled with opulent 1890s decorative features including carved stone heads and armorial emblems, painted ceilings, Adam-style fireplaces, fine decorative ironwork and wood panelling. An inglenook fireplace of huge proportions heated the music room. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
