Scope and Content St Rollox Locomotive Works, Springburn Road, Glasgow This works was established in 1856-57 by the Caledonian Railway as their central workshops for the repair and manufacture of locomotives and rolling stock. The works was completely rebuilt in the 1880s to designs by Robert Dundas, engineer, under the direction of Dugald Drummond. This shows the west side of the works from the north-west, with the gables of the heavy workshops used for building and repairing steam locomotives. In the right background is the bridge carrying the former Garnkirk & Glasgow Railway over Springburn Road, replacing the original level crossing. With the decline in rail transport, and the disappearance of steam locomotives, activity in these works has declined sharply, and large parts have been demolished. Electric trains used in the Glasgow area are, however still overhauled in what is now known as the Springburn Railway Works. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
