Scope and Content St Rollox Locomotive Works, Springburn Road, Glasgow This works was established in 1856-7 by the Caledonian Railway as their central workshops for the repair and manufacture of locomotives and rolling stock. The works was completely rebuilt in the 1880s to designs by Robert Dundas, engineer, under the direction of Dugald Drummond. This shows the north side of the works from the north-west, with some of the lighter workshops. In the foreground is the former St Rollox Station, on the branch line to Buchanan Street Station, which had closed in 1966. With the decline in rail transport, and the disappearance of steam locomotives, activity in these works has declined sharply, and large parts have been demolished. Electric trains used in the Glasgow area are, however still overhauled in what is now known as the Springburn Railway Works. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
