Scope and Content Weston Building Co (Hubbard's Bakery), Nos 65-73 Otago Street, Glasgow This bakery was built in 1905-6 for Walter Hubbard Ltd to make bakery products for their chain of retail shops. It was designed by Andrew Balfour, architect and built on a sloping site between Otago Street and the river Kelvin, with a nicely-detailed frontage to the street. This shows the rear of the bakery, facing the river, a relatively late example of the use of red and white brick in an industrial building. The front building, which incorporated the firm's head office, was faced with red terra-cotta brick with sandstone dressings. Hubbards were described in 1924 as bakers, rusk manufacturers, confectioners, and purveyors, specialising particularly in rusks and wedding cakes. At 508-10 Great Western Road is an Art Deco building built in 1929 for Hubbards as a baker's shop and restaurant, now a public house. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
