Scope and Content Kingston Bridge (M8), Glasgow This bridge was built to carry the M8 urban motorway over the river Clyde. It is constructed of reinforced concrete, and is in fact two parallel bridges. It was designed by W A Fairhurst & Partners, and completed in 1970. It has a long approach viaduct on each side, especially on the north. This shows the bridge under construction. It was built as two pairs of cantilevers, balanced about the piers, and this photograph shows the north side of the north east cantilever, and the pier of the north west cantilever, with the south cantilevers in the right background. When the bridge was completed the central span was consolidated to form a continuous beam. The main span is 143m long, with side spans of 62.5m. The bridge has for many years carried heavier traffic then its designed load, and had to be repaired in the 1990s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
