Scope and Content Houldsworth's Cotton Mill (Anderston Cotton Work), No 93 Cheapside Street, Glasgow This mill was built in about 1804-06 for Henry Houldsworth, cotton spinner, to make fine cotton yarn for muslin weaving. The building was designed to be as nearly fireproof as possible, with brick-arched floors supported on cast-iron beams and columns, and iron roof trusses and window frames. This shows a cross-section of the building as revealed by a partial collapse in 1964, when the building was being used as a bonded warehouse. The columns are hollow, and were originally used for steam heating the mill, which had to be kept hot to spin fine yarn. The mill was doubled in length in about 1860, though the addition was not fireproof. It was used as a bonded warehouse from 1878 to 1964, when the partial collapse took place. It was Glasgow's first 'fireproof' building, and also the city's first large brick building. It was demolished in 1969. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
