Scope and Content Lounge Hall, The Homestead (now Malcolm Sargent House), No 22 Links Road, Prestwick, South Ayrshire The Homestead, a large Edwardian villa overlooking Prestwick golf links, was built in 1901 by the Ayrshire architect, James A Morris. This photograph of the lounge hall was taken in 1903 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The lounge hall, on the first floor of the house, is designed with cottage-style ceiling beams and a huge inglenook fireplace. It has a stencilled Art Nouveau frieze and light fittings that allow for all eventualities, with candles above and bulbs below. The idea of a lounge hall came from the great hall of a large country house which served as an informal meeting place, and whose fireplace provided most of the heat in the house. Here it has been translated into a comfortable and stylish living area. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
