Scope and Content View from south-east of music room, Carrick House, Carrick Avenue, Ayr, South Ayrshire Carrick House, a fine Victorian mansion with a huge music room, was built c.1844. It was extended in the 1890s, when fine interior decoration was carried out by John Archibald Campbell (d.1909), and in 1919 by A Stevenson. The house was demolished c.1979, and the site used for the construction of sheltered housing. This shows the music room with its high ceiling lit by stained glass windows in the roof. The remains of the blinds which covered these hang down on strings. The end wall is ornately panelled and has a large bay window with built-in seats, similar to those which can be seen inside the large carved stone inglenook fireplace. The music room was designed to impress to the visitor. The huge scale of the fireplace, and the lofty height of the roof contrast with the cosy seating built into the windows and fireplace, and the intricacy of the stone and wood carvings.
