Scope and Content Detail of ceiling of inglenook fireplace in the music room, Carrick House, Carrick Avenue, Ayr, South Ayrshire Carrick House, a fine Victorian mansion with a huge music room, built c.1844. It was extended in the 1890s, when fine interior decoration was carried out by John Archibald Campbell (d.1909), and in 1919 by A Stevenson. The house was demolished c.1979, and the site used for the construction of sheltered housing. This shows the wooden-panelled ceiling within the huge inglenook fireplace. The arch of the fireplace itself can just be seen (left). Seats within the inglenook fireplace would have let the visitor get warm by the fire whilst admiring this ceiling and the painted panels which once filled the three central framed areas. The music room was designed to impress the visitor, with its huge stone inglenook fireplace and lofty roof, lit by stained glass panels. These features were contrasted with intricate decorative details like this panelled inglenook ceiling, delicate wood carvings, and sculptured details. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
