Scope and Content Main Entrance, The Towans (now demolished), Powbank Mill Road, Prestwick, South Ayrshire The Towans, a creamy, harled Arts and Crafts villa, was built c.1897 by the Glasgow architect, Alexander Nisbet Paterson, in a splendid setting on the Ayrshire coast. This photograph of the house was taken c.1867 by the photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The panel above the door was carved with fleur-de-lys and a fine example of the Arts and Crafts movement's taste for mottoes: 'Welcome the coming and speed the parting guest'. To the right of the door is a carriage mounting block. Until its rail link with Glasgow in 1846, Prestwick was a typical Ayrshire village. In the late 19th century the railway brought a new economy, centred around the fashionable seaside summer homes for wealthy Glaswegians, and the popular sport of golf.
