Scope and Content Towans (now demolished), Powbank Mill Road, Prestwick, South Ayrshire The Towans, designed by Alexander Nisbet Paterson, was an Arts and Crafts villa which stood in a splendid coastal setting beside Monkton and Prestwick Parish Church. The house was photographed c.1897 by the photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The main rooms lay in a built-out block (left), with the service apartments set back behind a long retaining wall. The drawing room was bay-windowed, and the dining room had an inglenook fireplace, flanked by two windows built into the chimney gable. Prestwick lies on the coast of the Firth of Clyde, 56 km from Glasgow. The late Victorian period brought a new prosperity to the town, based on the needs of wealthy Glaswegians for fashionable seaside summer homes and the popular sport of golf.
