Scope and Content Towans (now demolished), Powbank Mill Road, Prestwick, South Ayrshire The Towans, a charming villa in a splendid setting beside Monkton and Prestwick Parish Church, was designed by Alexander Nisbet Paterson. The exterior of the house was photographed c.1897 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. This long, low house had a steeply pitched, gently curving roof, overhanging eaves, horizontal bands of windows, and a trite motto carved on the large panel above the door, all examples of the style and taste of the Arts and Crafts movement. The Art and Crafts movement began in the second half of the 19th century. It turned away from Victorian Gothic architecture to the simpler vernacular styles of the 17th and 18th centuries, externally characterised by plain walls and steeply pitched roofs.
