Scope and Content Towans (now demolished), Powbank Mill Road, Prestwick, South Ayrshire The Towans, a creamy, harled Arts and Crafts villa, was designed by the architect, Alexander Nisbet Paterson. The distinguished architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, was commissioned to photograph the house shortly after it was completed. The main apartments lay in the built-out block (left), with the service apartments set back and partially concealed behind the extensive retaining wall (right). The drawing room was bay-windowed, with views over the sloping, grassy garden to the sea. Alexander Nisbet Paterson (1862-1947) studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. As a successful architect, he designed several country houses, including the Longcroft, Helensburgh, for himself. His wife, Maggie Hamilton, was a well-known embroiderer.
